However I will begin by saying the Acronym COPINE stands for Cooperative Information Network. COPINE is a Nigerian Federal Ministry of Science and Technology Information Technology (IT) Research Centre directly established under NITDA (National Information Technology Development Agency). COPINE was established in the year 1996 as a Pilot Project (under the aegis of the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) ) involving five African countires with the Nigerian chapter located at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife .

COPINE is also expected to facilitate much more. Examples are

  • Setting up data banks and networks of people based on Information Communications Technology(ICT)
  • Enhancing the spirit of partnership and cooperation for social development.
  • Encouraging the participation of industries, entrepreneurs, and international agencies.
  • Enhancing capacity by organizing visits to industries, universities and research centers.
  • Promoting better training of all stakeholders in organic development.
  • Sanitizing system-man linkages for economic development.

Moreover COPINE mandate is strategically posed to covers five broad areas of the Nigerian Economy.

    1. Tele-Education
    2. Telemedicine
    3. Natural Resources
    4. Agriculture
    5. Virtual Laboratory

 

COPINE also maintains a rich collection of Users Groups. Further information about this Group will be dispensed in due time.
