Computer Aid International is a UK based Charity Organization that aims to “bridge the digital divide” through ICT for development programme, which includes donation of refurbished computer systems to schools, health and educational institutions. Since 1998, Computer Aid International has donated over 90,000 Personal Computers to a broad spectrum of beneficiaries in different countries in Africa.
In order to bridge the digital divide in Nigeria, COPINE is collaborating with Computer Aid International and this started towards the end of year 2006 when COPINE first had a contact with the organization. The West Africa Programme Officer of the Computer Aid International paid her first visit to COPINE on the 17th of July 2007 during a workshop organized by COPINE, “Light for LITE”.
Three batches of refurbished computers had been distributed to different categories of beneficiaries ranging from individuals, secondary schools, tertiary institutions, religion institutions, cooperative societies etc. A total number of six hundred and ninety – three units of PCs comprising of Pentium 4s and Pentium 3s was received and distributed. The first batch was distributed in October 2007, the second batch in April 2008 and the third batch in November 2008. A computer manual was also produced for beneficiaries to go through before installing their systems.
COPINE has been collaborating with CAI on this project and the organization has recorded huge success in this regard up to the present time.
Computer Aid International computers are professionally refurbished and factory tested desktop computer systems being donated to developing nations to facilitate Information Technology (IT) penetration, most especially in Africa. This includes Central Processing Unit (CPU), monitor, keyboard and mouse only.
Please note that the amount paid on each computer unit is meant only to transport the computer donation from UK to Nigeria.
